The Gradual Instant

“Boundaries…are the places or moments where things are exposed to each other. Boundaries separate domains, and by this very act create the domains that they separate. They engender new configurations and patterns, which elicit new understanding – which, in turn leads to new boundaries. This is a reciprocal and reiterative process, in which understanding and boundaries repeatedly redefine each other. Understanding, by Wittgenstein’s definition as the seeing of connections, is a boundary crossing and any such transition entails a new boundary drawing. Understanding can thus be characterized as a shifting of boundaries.”
